The Book of General Ignorance
John Lloyd and John Mitchinson
Faber and Faber 2006

Q How long does it take to read this book?
A One would think around a week.  However, it actually took around 16 months.

This book of smart-aleckry, debunking commonly held beliefs (e.g Coffee is made from beans; Bangkok is the capital of Thailand), is very annoying and, as Stephen Fry would have it, quite interesting.  Trouble is you must read it in small doses, and even then the majority of information goes in one ear and out the other – and as there is no index or apparent order to items, you will never find the information again unless you re-read the book – and you wouldn’t want to do that.  QI’s Stephen Fry contributes a smug foreword (his association with this venture will polarise your opinion of him further without doubt) and Alan Davies four words (very droll and again not likely to do much for his reputation following recent hilarious tramp-biting incident).  A book for toilets I think.
